As a Christian, I deeply value faith and the moral foundation it provides in our lives, our communities, and our families. I understand and appreciate the intent behind Senate Bill 10, which seeks to promote values many Texans hold dear.
However, I also firmly believe that public schools should be a place of unity, not division. Our state is home to a rich and diverse population with a wide range of religious beliefs. No student should feel marginalized or less valued because of their faith—or lack thereof.
Religious freedom is a cornerstone of both our Constitution and our American identity. We must be cautious not to cross the line from protecting that freedom to appearing to endorse one faith over others in our public institutions. Doing so could unintentionally alienate students and families, and that is not the Texas we should strive to build.
As Governor, I will always support the rights of individuals to practice their faith freely and openly, while also ensuring our public schools remain inclusive, respectful spaces for every child, regardless of their religious background.
